At New Driveway Company we keep our ground workers safe and happy. Here’s a guide to how we do it…
Employees who work outside all year round face many struggles due to the ever-changing weather conditions. Depending on the worker any environment can be detrimental to someone’s health and safety in a job.
It’s vital that employers make sure these employees are treated fairly and compensated or provided with the right things to aid them. This could include items such as protective clothing, warm beverages, and a place to take breaks from the elements. Working outdoors all year can also lead to fatigue and loss of productivity, so employers should provide incentives for taking regular breaks and setting reasonable expectations for employees’ workloads. This guide will discuss some of the more important aspects employers should be helping with when issues arise.
During Summer
The heat can be extremely dangerous for those who work outdoors. Not only does the intense temperature put workers at risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion, but it can also increase the likelihood of headaches, dizziness, muscle cramps, and other adverse health effects. In extreme cases, these conditions can lead to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke.
What can employers provide?
Employers should take this potential danger seriously by providing their outdoor workers with ample hydration opportunities throughout the day, access to shade or shelter so they have somewhere to go and take breaks from the direct sunlight, and proper ventilation gear and PPE designed to keep them cool while they work. Furthermore, employers could provide additional incentives such as cooling vests or hats that are designed to keep workers’ body temperatures down while working in high temperatures. Ultimately, employers should do all they can to make sure that their employees’ safety is a top priority in hot weather conditions.
During Winter
Working outside in cold weather can also be incredibly difficult and dangerous. Extreme temperatures can cause frostbite, hypothermia, exhaustion, and even death if workers are not adequately protected.
What can be done?
Employers must ensure that their employees are provided with adequate winter clothing such as hats, gloves, scarves, boots, and layers of insulated clothing to protect them from the elements. Furthermore, employers should provide regular breaks during which workers can warm up and have access to hot drinks and snacks in order to keep energy levels up. Employers should also consider providing heated shelters where workers can take a break without having to go indoors. Employers should also make sure that their employees know what the signs of hypothermia and frostbite are so that they can recognise these conditions early and get help if needed. By ensuring that their employees have the necessary resources to work safely in the winter months, employers will help minimise the risks associated with working in extreme cold weather conditions.
Medical problems
In some cases, there might also need to be additional measures taken if an employee has already been diagnosed with a medical condition that may be exacerbated by certain temperature fluctuations (for example respiratory illness). Employers should make alternative arrangements such as agreed-upon days off so that these individuals aren’t forced into situations where they could put themselves at risk due to factors beyond their control—this could include anything from taking time off altogether if necessary or relocating them to an indoor job site for extended periods of time if available resources allow it.
Temperature extremes create very real risks for outdoor employees which must not be overlooked by employers. Taking proactive steps like providing appropriate attire and sunscreen access, arranging schedule shifts, allowing regular breaks indoors, and offering alternative arrangements depending upon each individual’s unique circumstances will go a long way towards keeping your hardworking outdoors staff happy all year round no matter how dramatic mother nature decides to be.
